Rustic Hard Maple Serving Trays w/ Handles
These serving trays are made from Rustic Hard Maple, and the figure, tone and grain movement in them is truly something to behold.
Most people would choose to make boards like this out of a very wide board - as this would cut down on the labor - but we use every piece of lumber in our inventory and choose our pieces wisely. Also, by choosing our pieces carefully and laminating two pieces together, we are able to make gorgeous serving trays that make a statement, some of which look as though they have been book matched.
There is a lot of care and attention to detail that goes in to each and every board, starting with board selection, alignment, grain orientation, etc. Rustic grade lumber, by its very nature, tends to be quite knotty and have some splits and voids. We make sure to stabilize every piece and fill in all cracks, voids, etc. with food safe CA glue, but we do try our best to select portions of the boards that have the fewest defects while also opting for really cool movement in the grain and figure in the wood itself.
We sand our boards at 80, 100, 120, 150, 180 and 220 grits, never skipping a step. And we water pop our boards before our final sanding. Also, we apply Walrus Oil to our boards after the final sanding, let them rest overnight, wipe off any excess oil and then seal with Walrus Wax.
These serving trays all measure 8"W x 24"L x 0.75"T.
